WATER quality in Telok Gong, Selangor has shown improvement following the implementation of the Water Quality Conservation Programme in Dec 2024.
Public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said that as of March 2025, the Water Quality Index (WQI) status has reached Class III – Moderately Polluted, which allows for raw water supply purposes with intensive treatment.
"The state government, through the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), has been actively implementing river monitoring measures via the River Monitoring Programme (RMP) since April 2023 to ensure that the rivers in the state are in good condition with the potential for improved water quality,
"This programme is a micro-level approach involving the monitoring of the quality of outflows discharging into major rivers in Selangor and is carried out periodically.
"To date, four sampling exercises have been conducted in the Sungai Telok Gong area under the Water Quality Conservation Programme.
"This involved several locations, namely Jalan Ikan Tampang and Jalan Udang Galah, where water flows into Sungai Langat, as well as PGA Jeti Parajurit (which flows into the Selat Lumut)," she said in a statement on Friday (April 18).
As a long-term measure, the state government, through LUAS, has gazetted and enforced the Discharge of Return Water, and Entry or Discharge of Waste and Pollutants (State of Selangor) 2024, also known as the Zero Discharge Policy (ZDP).
This policy focuses on the regulation of both the quantity and quality of water sources from environmental sources.
The implementation of the ZDP began in the Telok Gong area through a state-level collaboration between LUAS, Telok Gong Manufacturers Association and Port Klang assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri, who had also attended an engagement session with stakeholders on Dec 5, 2024.
Telok Gong Industrial Park is the first industrial area in Selangor to be involved in the implementation of this ZDP.
Jamaliah added that LUAS is engaging with industrial premises in the Telok Gong area to provide information on the control of discharges from premises and the requirement for ZDP licences.
"To date, approximately 92 ZDP licences have been issued to industrial premises in the Telok Gong area.
"The state government hopes that through these initiatives, the quality of water sources in the Telok Gong area can be improved with strong commitment from all stakeholders, including premise owners, commercial and industrial players.
"The state will not compromise and will take firm action against any activities that pose problems or pollute water sources, in line with Section 79(4) of the LUAS Enactment 1999," Jamaliah said.
