Fees for digital licence imposed upon renewal, new application of business licence

BUSINESS licence holders in Ampang Jaya, Selangor, are charged a fee under the local authority's digital licence system.

Ampang Jaya Municipal Council’s (MPAJ) SMARTLicense system, introduced in July last year, includes a business licence in digital format and a device that is installed at the business premises.

The fee is charged when owners renew their business licences or apply for a new business licence, said MPAJ.

“For existing business premises, the charge for the installation of the SMARTLicense device was imposed during the renewal of the business premises licence starting from October 2024.

“For new business premises, the charge will be imposed when the application for the business premises licence is approved,” MPAJ said in a media statement.

"The installation and management charges for the device are imposed only once.

"However, there is an annual subscription fee of RM45 for the device," said the local council.

The management fee is RM50 and installation fee is RM10.

MPAJ stated that the devices were installed at business premises in its jurisdiction between June and December last year.

“MPAJ conducted an engagement session on the implementation of the SMARTLicense System, involving licensed business premises owners within the MPAJ administrative area in June 2024.

“Through this session, premises owners were thoroughly informed about the implementation of the SMARTLicense System, including the installation of the MPAJ SMARTLicense Device,” it added.

StarMetro previously reported that the shift to digital business licences was to allow for easier business operations and increase enforcement efficiency.

It is meant to tackle several issues, including licence forgery, overlaps and loss of licences, while also identifying unlicensed operations.
