SHAH ALAM: Selangor spent RM800mil in 2025 to replace 285km of ageing pipes as the state government targets a 1% annual reduction in non-revenue water (NRW).
State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said that high costs and technical challenges continue to impact these works. Last year, Selangor recorded an NRW rate of approximately 27%.
"Last year alone, the state government spent RM800mil to replace some 285km of pipes," Izham said during a press briefing on the sidelines of the state assembly sitting on Wednesday (April 29).
"Besides the pipes, there are lots of components involved in such works, driving up prices."
He added that regulatory hurdles also affect progress.
"These projects also require approvals from local authorities as they involve road closures, often in high-density residential areas," he said.
The state government aims to replace 300km of pipes this year. Izham said that the goal to reduce NRW by 1% each year may cost around RM100mil.
"That percentage may seem small, but it is actually significant as it involves 6,500 million litres of water," he said.
The briefing was held to launch the Selangor Agenda for Green Economy 2025-2035 (Sage) website. The portal provides information on renewable energy projects and the green economy sector.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari previously stated that the green economy sector is expected to draw RM63bil in investment by 2035.
