Mayor hopes award will motivate MBPJ staff to work harder
PETALING Jaya has once again been crowned the Happiest City in Malaysia, securing the coveted award for the second consecutive year.
Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon proudly announced the achievement, reflecting the city’s ongoing dedication to enhancing quality of life for its residents.
He said Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) received a letter from Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) inviting him to receive the Happiest City Award for 2025.
The happiness index is based on a survey carried out across 144 local authorities across Malaysia.
The index is measured by the Malaysian Urban Rural National Indicators Network for Sustainable Development, known as Murninets, through PLANMalaysia.
Mohamad Zahri said that last year, they received 28 awards both locally and internationally, including being recognised as the Happiest City.
“This recognition covers 14 criteria, including the environment, local leadership, local authority services, infrastructure and residents’ satisfaction with their neighbourhoods.
“It is hoped to serve as a driving force for all staff to work even harder and strive to deliver exceptional services to the residents,” he said.
Mohamad Zahri said this during the city council’s Ramadan food basket donation programme at Menara MBPJ in Petaling Jaya.
A total 2,000 MBPJ employees received daily necessities including 5kg of rice, canned sardines, and 1kg of cooking oil, among others.
The local authority allocated RM105,000 for the Ramadan food basket programme.
Mohamad Zahri also announced that Petaling Jaya would host the state-level Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration on April 6.
“There’s a possibility that the celebration will be held in Taman Medan this year,” he added.
