DISTRIBUTING free bubur lambuk to the less fortunate during Ramadan is a cherished tradition.
Kelab Media Mutiara Pulau Pinang (Mutiara) has continued this tradition by serving the dish to the poor, the homeless, mosque congregants and the public at Masjid Kapitan Keling in George Town.
Mutiara president Mohd Iskandar Othman said the event saw its members preparing around 1,000 servings of bubur lambuk.
“The distribution began at around 5pm,” he said.
“The heartwarming dish also drew in the community living around Jalan Buckingham.
“This programme not only celebrates the spirit of Ramadan with club members and those in need, but also strengthens our bond with the management of Masjid Kapitan Keling,” he added.
Mohd Iskandar said the bubur lambuk programme was being held for the third consecutive year.
Masjid Kapitan Keling committee member Mohamed Rizwan Abdul Ghafoor said 15 mosque volunteers worked tirelessly to cook bubur lambuk.
“The preparations began early in the morning, with volunteers cooking, packing and finally distributing the dish to the public,” he said.
The tradition of serving bubur lambuk at the mosque dates back to the 1800s.
Locally known as nombu kanji, this dish has been observed as a Ramadan custom at the mosque for over 200 years.
The porridge, made with a mix of herbs and vegetables such as carrots, mint, pandan leaves, celery, tomatoes, coriander and curry leaves, is further enriched with ginger, lentils, chillies, ghee and briyani spices.
The Ramadan delicacy is enjoyed not only by the local Muslim community but also by people from various backgrounds, including foreign tourists visiting the state.
