Unimas helping to develop Sarawak’s bamboo industry

A COLLABORATION on bamboo-related research has been forged by Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

Both parties visited STIDC’s bamboo trial plot in Sabal, Simunjan.

The Unimas team was led by research and innovation deputy vice-chancellor Prof Dr Siti Noor Linda Taib.

Besides viewing the bamboo project, the visit was also to explore the research potential.

Prof Siti Noor Linda said the visit provided the Unimas team an opportunity to identify ways for researchers to gain ideas and inspiration to contribute to the development of Sarawak’s bamboo industry.

“We have identified the immense potential within the bamboo industry and are keen to assist STIDC in expanding this sector in bringing positive impact on Sarawak’s economy.

“This visit has allowed us to identify broader collaboration opportunities that can be explored further,” she said in a Sarawak Communication Unit post on Facebook.

The collaboration, she said focused on upstream and downstream activities which were crucial for ensuring the sustainable and impactful development of the bamboo industry.
