TRAVELLERS who appreciate a multi-sensory experience infused with local charm will love staying at the new Iconic Marjorie Hotel in Penang.
It is the latest addition to Marriott International’s Tribute Portfolio and is set to pamper guests with refined comfort, unparalleled service and unique surroundings.
The hotel is strategically located in Bayan Lepas and offers 298 guest rooms.
The RM180mil Iconic Marjorie Hotel was designed to pay homage to Penang’s Peranakan or Baba Nyonya culture.
Its timeless motifs and hues were cleverly woven into every corner of the elegant modern property, including all five categories of guest rooms, ranging in sizes from 30sqm to 72sqm.
The intricate patterns of Peranakan floor tiles and embroidery are reimagined as wall accents, carpets and cushion coverings.
Even the nightstands and light fixtures have an old-world touch.
These elements are replicated across the hotel’s three dining venues, namely Tiffin Hall all-day dining restaurant, Loom and Leafs Lounge for light bites and drinks as well as Senses Bar, a vibrant poolside escape offering signature cocktails and premium drinks.
The hotel, built by Iconic Group and designed by hospitality design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates, opened for business on Dec 7 and had its soft opening ceremony on Dec 28.
It was officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow alongside Iconic Group chairman Datuk Seri Tan Kean Tet and a host of dignitaries.
“The legacy of the Peranakan community goes back centuries.
“By fusing its culture with contemporary design, Iconic and Marriott have created a unique, premium destination for travellers, which will undoubtedly enhance Penang’s reputation as a global tourist destination,” Chow said in his speech.
Kean Tet said the hotel’s opening represented a significant milestone for the group and would contribute towards the economic growth of the Bayan Lepas area and beyond.
“The hotel is not just a luxury destination but a celebration of Penang’s rich cultural heritage and a testament to our commitment to delivering excellence in real estate and hospitality,” he added.
Guests who attended the opening ceremony were brought on a tour of the property.
It has a vast 1,321sqm grand ballroom that can accommodate up to 800 people, as well as six other smaller function rooms, making it a choice venue for business events, conferences and weddings.
The hotel, located on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, is just a 10-minute drive from Penang International Airport and in close proximity to various shopping and entertainment attractions.
Iconic Worldwide Bhd managing director James Tan said it was the first hotel in Penang to achieve the Green Building Index gold certification, due to its use of energy-efficient features as well as sustainable building materials and methods.
He also shared that the group would be managing up to 200 serviced residence units in a tower located right next to the hotel, called Iconic Regency Service Residences.
Also present at the event were Penang state executive councillors Wong Hon Wai and Fahmi Zainol, Penang island mayor Datuk Rajendran P. Anthony, Chinese consul-general in Penang Zhou Youbin and Marriott International market vice-president (Malaysia) George Varughese.
