Marriott, Iconic Group to bring Courtyard by Marriott to Penang Mainland

KUALA LUMPUR: Marriott International and Iconic Group have signed an agreement to introduce the Courtyard by Marriott brand to Penang Mainland through the rebranding of the existing Iconic Hotel Penang.

The hotel, to be known as Courtyard by Marriott Penang Icon City, is expected to open in December 2026 following a phased transformation of the property.

Located within the four-hectare Icon City integrated development in Bukit Mertajam, the 196-room hotel will serve business and leisure travellers, offering convenient access to the North-South Expressway, Penang International Airport and key industrial parks including Prai, Batu Kawan and Kulim Hi-Tech Park.

In a statement, Marriott International vice-president of hotel development for Asia Pacific excluding China, Andree Susilo, said the signing reflects the company's continued expansion strategy in Malaysia.

“Our continued collaboration with Iconic Group demonstrates the strength of the relationships we seek to build with owners who share our long-term vision for growth.

“We are delighted to expand our relationship further through the introduction of Courtyard by Marriott Penang Icon City, bringing one of our globally recognised brands to this fast-growing commercial destination."

Courtyard by Marriott is part of Marriott Bonvoy's portfolio of brands and is designed for business and leisure travellers with contemporary guestrooms, workspaces, meeting facilities and dining options.

The hotel's transformation will include upgrades to public areas, restaurants, guestrooms, recreational facilities and fitness and wellness amenities.

Upon completion, the hotel is expected to feature an all-day dining restaurant, café, bar, outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms, a 640 sq m divisible ballroom and two additional meeting rooms.

Iconic Group chairman Datuk Seri Tan Kean Tet said the project marks another milestone in the group's collaboration with Marriott International, following the opening of Iconic Marjorie Penang, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel.

He said the introduction of the Courtyard by Marriott brand to Icon City reflects the group's confidence in the continued growth of Penang Mainland and its business and leisure travel market.
