Tableau of Johor identity

The first mural next to Jalan Tan Hiok Nee heritage street archway in Johor Baru features traditional musical instruments.

MORE murals showcasing Johor’s identity will be coming up at strategic locations in Johor Baru.

State unity, heritage and culture committee chairman K. Raven Kumar said the first artwork next to Jalan Tan Hiok Nee heritage street archway was completed in December.

“It features traditional musical instruments typically used in Johor’s ghazal music such as gambus, tabla, violin, maracas, harmonium and tambourine.

“It took the artist Muhammad Nabil Mohd Azahari about two weeks to complete but before that, Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) had already spent weeks clearing and cleaning the area.

“We hope this mural, besides being a new tourist attraction, will also promote Johor’s heritage,” he said at the unveiling.

Raven Kumar said three more murals would be added in other parts of the city in preparation for Visit Johor Year 2026.

“We are in the midst of identifying suitable locations for the murals, which will feature other Johor elements such as history and food,” he said.

“The project will probably begin after February, after the monsoon season.”

He added that the murals would be funded by additional allocation from Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
