Selangor exempts affordable housing from advancement fee

AFFORDABLE housing in Selangor will be free from advancement fees starting next year, says Selangor housing and culture committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah.

He said that the exemption applies specifically to affordable housing projects like Rumah Idaman and Rumah Harapan.

Borhan said this at a press conference after the 3rd Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association (Rehda) Housing Convention 2024 at the Setia City Convention Centre on Wednesday (Oct 9).

"Regular-priced houses will not benefit from this exemption. The exemption for affordable housing will take effect from January next year and will remain in place indefinitely," he added.

Borhan also said that the exemption is designed to encourage the development of more affordable homes in Selangor.

"We have a target of constructing approximately 200,000 units of affordable housing by 2026. With our current capacity to build around 40,000 units annually, this exemption should help speed up construction," he said.

Further details on the exemption will be provided by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari during the upcoming 2025 state budget presentation, expected in mid-November.

Borhan also discussed the forthcoming national budget to be announced on Oct 18, appealing for increased federal funds for Selangor.

"As the state contributing the most to the nation’s GDP, it is only fair that the federal government allocates more funds to Selangor to address pressing matters including flood mitigation and upgrading infrastructure," he added.
