Theatre company to celebrate 30-year milestone in grand style

A THEATRICAL extravaganza will be staged to celebrate Dama Asia’s 30th anniversary in the Malaysian performing arts.

Dama Asia is an award-winning bilingual theatre company.

Dama Asia artistic director Pun Kai Loon said the production would acknowledge supporters and audiences who have helped the theatre company over three decades.

“Our production, Magical 30 – A Malaysian Musical Journey, will be an unforgettable evening of joy, laughter and cultural celebration.

“Over three decades, we have featured a multi-racial Malaysian cast performing international hits in multiple languages, including English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil.

“We want to showcase a memorable performance with a remarkable cast that will see 30 soul-stirring songs, 30 insightful perspectives from theatre practitioners and 30 witty quips about show business,” said Pun.

He said eight shows from Oct 10 to 20 would be staged at 8pm on Thursday, Friday, Saturday while on Sunday, there would also be a matinee at 3pm.

He anticipates Magical 30, a fundraising event, to be sold-out shows at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya.

The event will be in aid of two non-profit organisations: Kiwanis Club of Kota Kemuning and All Women’s Action Society (Awam).

“Our show will see an appearance by famed soprano Tan Soo Suan, who is also known for her jazz classics like Love Without End and Lover’s Tears.

“We also have a wonderful jazz singer Chang Fang Chyi,” said Pun.

A variety of popular songs have been lined up such as Shake It Off, Nobody, Monica, We Will Rock You, a Tamil song Balleilakka from the movie Sivaji the Boss, a Siti Nurhaliza hit Anta Permana, Mandarin song Glory Days, Bekikis Bulu Betis, Legenda and a Sam Hui Medley.

According to Pun, saxophonist Daren Ng, erhu string musician Gan Boon We, keyboardist Bernice Tay, guitarist Tan Hee, drummer Sudin Nidus, percussionist Jonathan Lai and bassist Pito Perez are among the talented young musicians in the show.
