ONE of South-East Asia’s longest- running plays, Emily of Emerald Hill, will be making a stop in Johor Baru in September.

The production stars veteran actress Pearlly Chua, who grew up in Johor.

StageCraft Theatre Productions director Elizabeth Louis said Chua had played the role of the protagonist more than any other actress.

“Emily of Emerald Hill, by Singaporean playwright Stella Kon, tells the story of a Peranakan matriarch’s life as she manipulates and schemes her way to the top of the Nyonya hierarchy,” Louis said in a statement.

The play highlights issues such as forced marriage, teen brides, keeping up appearances, misogyny and societal expectations.

“But to thousands of fans and past audiences, it is most memorably the story of a steely yet vulnerable Peranakan woman’s will to thrive against the odds,” she said.

The one-woman play, directed by Chin San Sooi, will be staged at Jotic Auditorium on Sept 27 and 28.
