THE frequent water supply interruption in Sibu, Sarawak, is said to be caused by facilities reaching maximum capacity.
Its MP Oscar Ling is calling on Sibu Water Board (SWB) to upgrade its facilities to meet the town’s demand.
However, he anticipated that the water supply problem would only be fully resolved in the next three to five years.
“If SWB does the upgrading work now, I think they need three to five years to resolve the issue because a lot of areas are facing water shortage problems,” he said at a free health screening exercise.
Ling said SWB had recently received an allocation from Sarawak government to upgrade the facility.
“At least now we can see funds coming in, which will lead to upgrading work, and in a few years we will see a solution to this,” he said.
“I hope the state government will continue to look into this.”
Ling said raw water supply issues in Sibu needed to be monitored closely by the relevant agency.
He said this was the first time he had heard of water disruption caused by low water pressure because of low tide.
“We really need to look into environment matters because usually, there is no issue with raw water supply,” he said.
