Local council building to be new Sibu landmark

THE development of the new RM70mil Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) building is in line with the realisation of the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project, says Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

The Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister said proper planning was required due to the size of the building project.

“We are waiting for Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg’s masterplan for the Bukit Assek redevelopment.

“Everything will have to coordinate with the redevelopment master plan,” Tiang said to reporters at SMC’s Santai Raya celebration at the Islamic Complex.

The upcoming SMC building is expected to be a new landmark for the town.

It will be equipped with various facilities including lecture halls, meeting rooms and utility bill counters besides offices.

Separately, Tiang urged the local council to further promote Sibu once the Pan-Borneo highway is fully completed next year.

He said the town was poised to become the hub for logistics and road transportation in Sarawak.

“SMC needs to do more planning on this aspect so that Sibu can be the road transportation and logistics hub to serve Sarawak’s development,” he said.

Tiang also said it was important to prepare Sibu to accommodate the expected influx of tourists, especially with the introduction of flights from Singapore by Scoot this year.

He expressed hope that SMC would exert greater effort in formulating new policies and boosting promotional activities while collaborating closely with residents.
