A FRESHWATER fish sanctuary in the scenic Timah Tasoh lake in Perlis offers a rare opportunity for anglers to indulge in their hobby to their heart’s content.

The 20sq km lake is located at Timah Tasoh Dam in Beseri and is set to be a popular destination for visitors to the state. Besides fishing, there are various other leisure activities, including boating.

Perlis Fishermen’s Association deputy chairman Abd Azhar Abd Aziz, who is also manager of Timah Tasoh Freshwater Fish Sanctuary, said tourists who enjoyed fishing could opt to holiday at this destination with friends or family in the state.

He said visitors could go kayaking, ride on a lake patrol boat, rent fishing boats and buy freshwater fish as well as indulge in “freshwater fish pickle”.

Outdoor enthusiasts could also book a campsite close to the lake and enjoy a captivating sunset, he said, as reported by Bernama.

Abd Azhar said the lake had local fish such as lampam, talapia, belida, sepat and baung, as well as the invasive species of peacock bass (native to South America) and toman (snakehead).

He said visitors could also cruise in a patrol boat to see the beauty of Bukit Chabang, a landmark for hikers in Perlis, as well as take in the surrounding picturesque hills.

“The lake patrol boat ride costs RM50 for eight people and RM60 for 10 people, while renting a fishing boat is RM50 for three people,” he said.

Single kayaks cost RM10 to rent while double kayaks cost RM15; the overnight camping site charge is RM50.

“At this freshwater fish sanctuary, there is also a nearby pond for tourists to relax with their families and feed the fish,” said Abd Azhar.

Among the facilities provided for the convenience of visitors are food stalls, toilets and prayer rooms.

“This freshwater fish sanctuary is open every day from 8am to 7.30pm,” he said, adding that visitors could view the association’s social media page to make bookings.

Mohamad Shakhir Saidy Ridzah, 23, from Kuala Lumpur said he was on his first visit to the area and found the sanctuary “different” from other places.”

“This is my first trip here with my friends to experience the beauty of this place with its panoramic view and a serenity not found elsewhere.

“It is clean with good upkeep and there are various interesting activities available,” he said.

Another visitor, 25-year-old Nur Tasnim Shahruddin of Beseri, said she often visited the freshwater fish sanctuary with friends and family to take in the stunning sunset, which made her feel as if she were on holiday abroad.
