WHEN it comes to satisfying those night-time cravings, many Malaysians head for roadside burger stalls.

One such is tucked away in the heart of Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam – Smashed Burgers, located at Nasi Kandar Zubair Bistro.

The menu offers 10 burger choices such as Smashed Burger, Super Smashed Burger and Ultimate Smashed Burger.

The foundation of these creations are the buns, prepared daily at the central kitchen in Plaza Jelutong.

Owner Naeem Nassir, 33, said, “It all begins with the buns, on which the sauce, made in-house, is generously spread on the bottom half.

“The griddle is fired up before the patty is smashed onto it and seasoned with a dash of salt and pepper.

“The final touch is a slice of cheese which melts on the sizzling patty.”

As much as Naeem takes pride in the grilling process, he is also dedicated to quality.

He minces his meat in-house, bakes his own buns, prepares his signature sauces and even caramelises the onions himself.

He insists on using high-quality ingredients even though some advised against doing so, because of cost, when he started.

There is a delightful fluffiness to his burger buns and the sweet, tangy sauce adds the perfect touch to the patty.

Customers have the option of ordering additional patties at RM6 apiece.

Among the three options of side orders are Curly Fries (RM6) and Onion Rings (RM5), which are shipped from the US.

“The idea (for the stall) was conceived when I was a pilot for Oman Air,” said Naeem.

“My time in Oman exposed me to Americanised but halal food.”

His vision was clear from the start: to create a burger experience that delivered high-quality, affordable food without the use of processed meat.

“I like burgers but not those that are too sloppy.

“We don’t have sauce dripping all over, or the patties slipping out of the buns.

“We make it simple and presentable,” he said.

Burger prices range from RM8 to RM22.

Smashed Burgers is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 5pm to 10pm.
