Girl Guides Association of Malaysia (GGAM) chief commissioner Datuk Yeoh Soo Keng hosted a luncheon for participants of Olave Baden-Powell Society (OB-PS) Malaysia Conference 2023.
The OB-PS conference was organised to support World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), which this year is marking International Day of Girls by helping girls face the pressures and challenges of growing up.
The luncheon in Kuala Lumpur was graced by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, who is GGAM patron.
Also present were GGAM president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, GGAM chief commissioner Datuk Yeoh Soo Keng and OB-PS chairman Susan Campbell.
In her speech, Tunku Azizah said GGAM and WAGGGS had reached out to millions of girls over the years to inspire them.
“They have instilled strong leadership qualities among the girls.
“Knowing that this year’s theme for International Day of the Girls by WAGGGS is ‘Resilience for the Girls to be Prepared to Change the World’, brings me happiness.”
In her address, Wan Azizah touched on the myriad challenges facing girls and young women today, and their need to be stronger than ever.
She said WAGGGS hoped to hold activities that the girls needed to complete to help develop physical, mental and community resilience.
Meanwhile, Yeoh said the International Day of Girls was a call for everyone to empower girls and young women to lead meaningful change.
“This is the moment for us to create a space where brave girls can feel prepared to take on tasks, for example, championing the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that will enrich our communities,” she said.
There were interesting performances at the luncheon, all choreographed by GGAM.
The lunch event began with a poetry recital in Bahasa Malaysia, Tamil, Mandarin and English.
This was followed by an exciting Chinese drums performance and demonstrations of silat gayong and wushu.
Indian and vibrant Citrawarna dances along with a lion dance also entertained the guests.
In the rousing finale, all the performers came together to sing Saya Anak Malaysia (I Am a Child of Malaysia).
The luncheon was prepared in adherence to the United Nation’s SDG 3 of “Good Health and Well-being”.
A selection of healthy food was prepared that also showed off Malaysia’s multi-racial elements.
