LONG queues were seen at Padang Brown’s hawker complex as hundreds of people congregated to celebrate Maulidur Rasul in Penang.
The event, organised by the complex’s Hawkers Association, saw the crowd gathering as early as 8.30am before 1,000 packets of nasi maulid were handed out at 9.30am.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow handed out the food packets and praised the organisers and attendees for the celebration of unity regardless of backgrounds.
“Penang is almost a developed state and contributions from the community are important because without a united society we would not have achieved this stage of development.
“When presenting the state’s Unity Manifesto 2023, the state proposed to give out a one-off RM1,000 to all haj pilgrims from the B40 group to reduce their financial burdens,” he said.
Chow said the state was also making efforts to allocate RM20mil to all religious schools.
Association chairman Jamal Mohamed said they had been organising such celebrations for the past 50 years and would continue to do so.
“Thanks to support from the state, we will continue to organise a variety of events to bring the people together,” he said.
Maulidur Rasul, or the observance of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, is celebrated nationwide.
