THE SS14 Rukun Tetangga (RT) sector in Subang Jaya, Selangor wants the city council to instal a speed breaker at the intersection of Jalan SS14/5J and Jalan SS14 to get motorists to slow down when driving along that stretch.

Sector chairman Tan Eng Tor said the speed breaker was crucial as there were reports of at least one accident a month at the intersection with several near-misses as motorist enter or exit from Jalan SS14/5J or cross Jalan SS14 into Jalan SS14/5M.

He said SS14 has 1,556 residential units, all of whom are members of the RT sector.

“Our request to have a speed breaker is to reduce the perceived threat from speeding motor traffic.

Tan says it is crucial to impose traffic calming measures just before the SS14/5J and SS14 intersection.Tan says it is crucial to impose traffic calming measures just before the SS14/5J and SS14 intersection.

“This is also to create community ownership of the road where people feel more comfortable and safer to walk or cycle,” said the remisier who has been living in the area for about 30 years.

Tan, 66, added that it would be better if Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) could paint the words “Go Slow” at three points along the 350m-stretch of Jalan SS14/5J and at certain points along Jalan SS14 before the intersections to alert motorists.

Another resident A S Ooi, 62, pointed out that the yellow and white paint on the speed table at the pedestrian crossings along Jalan Jengka was not very visible, posing a danger to motorists.

“It is time MBSJ repainted the road markings along this main road.

“Even the broken white lines and arrows within the neighbourhood must be repainted to improve the safety of motorists and pedestrians,” said the former sales manager who has been a resident here since 1990.

Speed tables are elongated speed breakers combined with a flat section on top that provides a level surface for pedestrians to walk.

City councillor Ken Chia advised the SS14 RT to write in to MBSJ with a simple sketch for the location of the proposed speed breaker.

“I will check with MBSJ’s Engineering Department on the need for a speed breaker as proposed by the SS14 RT,” said Chia who is the Zone 1 councillor in charge of areas from SS12 to SS19.
