Extra pumps installed in Shah Alam’s flood-prone areas

Mohd Rashidi: The city council also has long-term plans to prevent flooding.

Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has installed water pumps at various high-risk flood locations.

MBSA Engineering Department acting director Hanif Basree Abdul Rahman said they had rented the extra water pumps to be used in Jalan Saksama 25/39, Jalan Sri Kandi 25/14, Jalan Muhibbah 25/7, and Jalan Bakti 25/15, all in Section 25.

“This is a short-term measure for the coming monsoon season,” he told a press conference yesterday at Wisma MBSA.

As for the city council’s long-term RM30mil flood mitigation measures for 2023, Hanif Basree said they included building pump houses and upgrading infrastructure work in Jalan Khidmat 23/35 and Jalan Saksama 25/39.

There is also a proposal to build a floodwall near a drain from Bulatan Aman to the sluice gate in Jalan Sri Kandi 25/14, Jalan Muhibbah 25/7 and Jalan Bakti 25/15.

“This is to upgrade the internal drainage system,” he said.

Shah Alam deputy mayor Mohd Rashidi Ruslan, who was also present at the press conference, said these projects would be evaluated and streamlined by the state government to bring a positive impact.

“There are some projects that need to be done very soon to prevent massive floods.

“The five projects will go through a tender process and I hope they can be carried out in January next year.

“In the meantime, we are getting ready to tackle the upcoming monsoon,” he said.

He added that MBSA would hold a flood simulation exercise on Oct 19 with cooperation from the Fire and Rescue Services Department and other agencies.

About 200 people comprising assemblymen and residents representatives will be involved.

“This is to advise people on what to do and who to call during floods, as well as to give them the locations of temporary flood relief centres,” said Mohd Rashidi.

On MBSA’s 2023 budget, he said the city council estimated a revenue of RM505mil while expenditure would be RM435.8mil for operating costs and RM143.5mil for development expenses.

“A deficit of RM74.3mil will be accommodated by using MBSA reserves,” he added.
