MBJB councillor: New stall layout will afford space for food court, raise trading site appeal
Taman Molek wet market in Johor Baru is undergoing a RM2mil upgrade to improve facilities and create a cleaner, more comfortable environment for vendors and shoppers.
Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) Taman Molek zone councillor Chong See Ming said the market had only undergone partial repairs over the years, such as roof repairs, installation of handrails and floor patching.
“The city council decided to carry out a comprehensive upgrade because the market, which is over 30 years old, has not undergone major improvements.
“Traders have raised concerns about conditions of the ageing market and inadequate facilities, while visitor numbers have gradually declined over the years.”
Chong said planned upgrades included reconfiguring the layout, with the number of stalls expected to be reduced to free up space for a food court.
“This is aimed at making the market more attractive and encourage more foot traffic and business activity,” he said.
The market currently has about 60 stalls occupied by 21 licensed traders.
However, only 14 traders are actively operating, selling vegetables, fruits, chicken, seafood and groceries.
Chong said MBJB hoped the improved environment would encourage more traders to return to the market, as some, including unlicensed operators, had chosen to operate outside the market premises.
He said the initial plan was to carry out works in stages, but MBJB instead decided to temporarily relocate the traders due to construction complexity, safety considerations and costs.
He said temporary tents had been set up outside the market to ensure traders could continue operating during the renovation period.
“The temporary relocation will also minimise noise, dust and hygiene issues during the refurbishment.
“The project is expected to take about six months and the city council hopes to complete it by next January.”
