From 2026, visitors to recreational areas in forest reserves and eco-forest parks in Terengganu will be able to apply for entry permits online through a new RM200,000 system.
Terengganu Forestry director Ramli Mat said, “The system will accept applications and payments for activities and facilities in forest reserves. These include daily visitor permits, hiking activities, chalet rentals, infrastructure and other services.
“Visitors from outside the state can apply for permits and pay online before arriving at the site.
“They only need to bring the receipt or proof of payment for registration upon arrival.”
The system was being developed with state government funding, he told Bernama during a visit to Lata Belatan and Lata Tembakah eco-forest parks in Besut.
Ramli said works were being carried out on facilities at the two eco-forest parks following the water surge incident in December 2024.
“Almost RM1mil was spent on rebuilding the suspension bridge, repairing the campsite and maintaining the hall, toilets, surau and carpark at both parks.
“We received RM500,000 from Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry for the project at Lata Belatan and almost the same amount from Terengganu government for the project at Lata Tembakah.”
Ramli said six of the 12 eco-forest parks in Terengganu were temporarily closed, namely Lata Tembakah, Jambu Bongkok (Marang), Besul (Dungun), Rasau Kerteh (Kemaman), Bukit Kesing (Kemaman) and Seri Amar (Setiu).
He said Lata Tembakah was expected to reopen next month.
Also present during the visit was Terengganu Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry director Mazshida Ruslal.
