Selangor govt considering climate emergency declaration

THE Selangor government is considering a climate emergency declaration following weather changes and flash floods in Malaysia in recent months.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the climate emergency is one of the Selangor government's proposals, but it cannot be done without proper data or research by experts on the matter.

"We have appointed several agencies such as Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) to study climate change in Malaysia."

He said the agencies were appointed in 2019, but due to the movement control order following the Covid-19 pandemic, the preliminary report had not been finalised.

"We are hoping the report will be completed by the end of this year or early next year.

"Once we get the report, we will focus on handling the increase of water level due to flash floods," said Amirudin after launching Air Selangor's coffee table book titled "Air Selangor Journey - Our Story" at the 1Utama Shopping Centre on Tuesday (Sept 13).

He added that the government has plans for coastal areas which might be affected in the future due to climate change.
