IT IS business as usual for food operators at the Section 17 Ramadan bazaar in Petaling Jaya, who keep their makeshift stalls open despite the heavy rain.
The bazaar along Jalan 17/1A has over 100 stalls and is popular among residents as well as students from neighbouring colleges.
During a visit by StarMetro, a murtabak stall was seen gathering a crowd.
The father-daughter team at Ayub’s Murtabak were kept busy as customers waited patiently for their orders.
Sherffeeka Ayub was preparing the dough for her father, while hurrying to another table to mix the ingredients to fill the murtabak with.
“We only operate once a year, which is why we may look overwhelmed by the long queue of people waiting for our murtabak,” said the 24-year-old.
As she prepared the gravy mixture with sliced onions, Sherffeeka also called out to passers-by saying “murtabak, murtabak” to grab their attention.
This is the family’s fifth year participating in the month-long Ramadan bazaar.
“We come back here all the time and our loyal customers know it,” she said, adding that a secret family recipe was what made their murtabak different from others.
Her father Ayub Yaakob, who hails from Jeli in Kelantan, prefers selling the family’s special murtabak only during the fasting month to keep the hype alive.
“If we sell it everyday, it will not be special anymore,” he said, hinting that the recipe was passed down generations and required a mixture of Indian spices.
Customers can opt for murtabak with chicken, beef, sardine, cheese or banana.
The murtabak is priced at RM4 each or RM10 for three pieces.
Sherffeeka said they sell up to 300 pieces a day.
Other popular favourites at the Section 17 Ramadan bazaar are roti John, kuih tepung pelita, nasi lemak, keropok lekor, nasi ayam, goreng pisang, nasi campur, satay, nasi kerabu and ayam golek.
