Brimming with CNY joy

MORE than 300 people attended Penang Gerakan’s Bukit Bendera Chinese New Year open house held at the SJKC Poay Wah in Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

It was a joyous affair as party leaders greeted the guests at the event on Sunday.

State Gerakan secretary H’ng Chee Wey said the party had always been with the people despite not being state government for the past 10 years.

“We still have our service centre to serve the people of Tanjung Bungah.”

State Gerakan chairman Teng Chang Yeow said people should vote for the Barisan candidate in Tanjung Bungah to stop the uncontrolled development of the area.

“Look at Tanjung Bungah, we cannot even recognise it now due to the rampant development which had destroyed the environment,” he said.

Guests were entertained by a Chinese traditional drum performance and cultural dance. There were also local delicacies such as laksa, satay, rojak and cendol for them to feast on.

Also present was Penang Chinese Clan Council president Anthony Chang.

Earlier, in Bayan Baru, Penang Gerakan vice-chairman Oh Tong Keong gave out 300 goodie bags filled with nasi lemak, snacks, mineral water, oranges and juice as well as ang pows to senior citizens to celebrate Chinese New Year.

“We have been doing this every year in the Bayan Baru area for the past five years and hope to continue doing it.

“It is our way of celebrating the new year as it is important to give back to society,” he said during the event at the Bayan Baru market complex.

Oh said the event was organised by his Pantai Jerejak Gerakan service centre and the Bayan Baru Gerakan Youth wing, with the support of donors.

He then urged the state government to allocate a place in Bayan Baru as an activity centre for senior citizens.

“They usually hang out at the market or shops to meet up with their friends. It would be great if there was a centre they could go to and meet up.

“It would also be great if there was a park for them as they could meet their friends and keep fit at the same time,” he added.
