PIG farmers who have switched to modern farming methods have seen a 20% increase in production rate says the Perak Animal Husbandry Association.
The association’s president David Lee Chli Yuan said the modern farming practises have brought a lot of improvement to the business and are also efficient in many other aspects.
“Prior to switching to the modern methods, it took about six months to prepare the animals to be sent for processing and marketed. Now, it takes about five and half months,” he said during a press conference to announce a special sale of pork this weekend.
“Some farms, which used to normally handle 10 animals at one time, can now prepare 12 at one go,” he said, adding that 60 out of 114 registered pig farms in the state have switched to modern farming methods.
“It is also because of the good production rate that we are able to have a sale,” he added.
It has been reported that all pig farms in the state have been told to conform to modern farming practices by this year.
Failure to do so will risk the farms getting shut down.
Lee said a special sale of pork will be held at Golden Point Foodcourt in Bercham and F&B (Frozen Meat) Distributors Sdn Bhd in Kawasan Perindustrian Rima, Lahat, on Jan 12 and 13 starting at 7pm.
He said about 200 animals will be prepared for the sale, with the meat being packed on days of the sale.
“The meat will be sold at between RM20 and RM30 per 3kg,” he said, adding that the event is being held in conjunction with the coming Chinese New Year celebrations.
“The last time we held such a sale was about six years ago,” he added.
Lee said the association will also be giving away 13 tonnes of pork to various non-governmental organisation and charity groups to be distributed to the needy.
“We have already started giving out the meat last week in Bidor,” he said.
