The Maldives has long established itself as a "honeymoon destination", thanks to its stunning islands, turquoise waters and reputation as a peaceful tropical paradise.
But there's more to the island nation than just romantic getaways. Travellers also come here to dive, snorkel and enjoy all sorts of water activities.
This September, holidaymakers can try a different way of exploring the Maldives with world-record freediver and ocean conservationist Hanli Prinsloo. Prinsloo is returning to the island nation to host not one but two freediving retreats.
The programme is held at Minor Hotels resorts in Baa Atoll, a Unesco Biosphere Reserve known for its rich marine life.
It starts with a three-night Family Freediving Retreat at Avani+ Fares Maldives from Sept 7 to 10, where parents and children can try freediving through breathwork, snorkelling, floating, gentle duck dives and underwater games. Rather than focusing on depth and competition, the retreat aims to help families become more confident in the water and enjoy the ocean together.
The retreat also kicks off the resort's Ocean Aware Month, which features acitivites such as coral planting, underwater photography, beach clean-ups and diving courses.
Prinsloo will then head to NH Collection Maldives Reethi from Sept 14 to 18 for Into the Blue, a four-night retreat for guests aged 16 and above. The programme comprises yoga, meditation, breathwork and freediving, allowing participants to learn and train at their own pace.
There will also be an excursion to Hanifaru Bay and opportunities to explore thr resort's house reef.
Additionally, guests can join World Manta Day activities on Sept 17, including snorkelling trips to Hanifaru Bay, known for its seasonal manta ray gatherings.
The Family Freediving Retreat starts from US$3,160 (RM12,728) per person, while Into the Blue starts from US$4,333 (RM17,453). Both packages include accommodation, full board, return seaplane transfers and retreat sessions.
