With its world-famous cafes, palaces and museums, Vienna might not need any more tourist attractions – but it’s getting some anyway.

An exhibition bringing visitors back to the year Mozart died, and newly refurbished and reopened medical and political landmarks in Vienna are among the latest attractions announced by tourism officials.

Vienna’s Steffl department stores have created a multimedia experience dedicated to Mozart in which visitors are taken back to Vienna in 1791, the year of the composer’s death.

Elsewhere, visitors can interactively play along with instruments in Mozart’s famous work Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The multimedia exhibition Mythos Mozart is designed as a 60-minute tour that opened in September.

Anyone interested in the history of medicine can soon visit the Josephinum, where Vienna houses the collections of the Medical University of Vienna. The museum was closed for almost four years of renovation work, but reopened on Sept 29.

Two highlights of the collection are a historical lecture hall with original wall paintings from 1785 and anatomical wax models from Italy from that time, according to the tourist board.

Meanwhile at the start of 2023, the parliament building at the Volksgarten, where Austria’s political councils meet, is to reopen its doors after extended renovation work.

A visitor centre will provide information about the work of the parliamentarians, and a glazed gallery will allow a view of the plenary chamber. On the roof, there will be a freely accessible terrace landscape with a panoramic view over Vienna. – dpa
