Malaysia's first 'aircraft reef' set to make Lang Tengah a top diving spot

An 'aircraft reef' in Pulau Lang Tengah, which is set to boost the island's reputation as a top diving destination, has earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).

The Piper PA-31 Navajo light airplane, also known as the Chieftain, won a spot in MBOR for being the first aircraft reef in Malaysia.

The sinking of the aircraft – an initiative by PPTD Divers, a club under the Administrative and Diplomatic Service Association – will create an artificial reef for marine life to thrive.

"The process of sinking the light airplane – the first time ever to be done in Malaysia – took place between May 19 and 21 with the purpose of enhancing the waters and marine life that surround Lang Tengah Island, besides turning into another underwater attraction," PPTD Divers said in a statement.

The club worked closely with the Marine Park and Resource Management Division in the Department of Fisheries. This is to ensure that all guidelines and standards are met so that the artificial reef is environmentally safe for marine life.

PPTD Divers hoped that the aircraft reef will contribute towards environmental sustainability and increase awareness on marine conservation.

MBOR said the initiative was a creative way to create an artificial reef.

"Truly a unique way to repurpose planes into a reef to encourage marine life and as a dive attraction. Congratulations to all who were involved with this unique project," it said on its official social media account.

Lang Tengah is favourite among many divers due its excellent marine life and beautiful coral reefs.
