Wanderlust is very much alive on social media, especially when it comes to chasing waterfalls. Niagara Falls has claimed the title as the world’s most Instagram-ed waterfall.
This is according to the latest survey by the website showerstoyou.co.uk, which collated the number of Instagram hashtags per waterfall. With a total of 3,397,431 hashtags, Niagara Falls in Canada the took the top spot.
“While one of the smallest by size (51m), it appears the famed romantic destination hasn’t lost its appeal, ” said the website.
In second place is Argentina’s Iguazu Falls. The venue’s hashtag is shared 1,005,532 times on Instagram and is a sight to see once overseas travel is allowed.
Gullfoss claims the third most popular waterfall on social media. One of Iceland’s biggest tourist attractions, physically and figuratively, it boasts 329,576 hashtags on Instagram.
In fourth is the famous Victoria Falls in Zambia (286,410 hashtags) and Skogafoss in Iceland (255,519 hashtags) in fifth.
Multnomah Falls (United States), Yosemite Falls (US), Seljalandsfoss (Iceland), Bridalveil Fall (US) and Snoqualmie Falls (US) round up the top 10 list.
The data represented live Instagram scores up to Jan 18 this year. All hashtag variations of waterfall names were included in the results to acquire the most accurate results possible.
While no local destinations made it to the list, Malaysia certainly has no shortage of beautiful waterfalls that make for wonderful Instagram backdrops.
There are over 100 known waterfalls in the country, and many of them offer a refreshing swim or a picturesque picnic spot for the family.
The Kota Tinggi Waterfalls in Johor for one, is a fun spot for kids and adults alike. There are two waterfalls in the same venue.
Elsewhere, the Telaga Tujuh Waterfall in Langkawi is a collection of seven intertwined natural pools filled by seven different waterfalls.
Other Instagram-worth waterfalls in the country to check out include Kanching Falls (Selangor), Lata Tembakah (Terengganu), Temurun Waterfall (Kedah), Jelawang Waterfall (Kelantan), Lata Iskandar Waterfall (Perak) and Tawai Waterfall (Sabah).
