Long gone are the days when dressing modestly was equated to frumpy clothing – these days, modest clothing is giving everyone a run for their money.

While stylish hijabistas flood our social media feeds dressed in chic layers, there are many who dress in modest fashion with reasons that have nothing to do with religion – the trend has simply become more versatile for all.

From billowing maxi dresses to casual tops, the popularity of modest fashion continues to rise as more people embrace different ways to style themselves and express their individuality.

Evolving trends

Calaqisya founders, sisters Azrina, Yana and Farah Khairuddin launched their brand in 2008 when options for modestwear were limited.

“Back then, there was only an abundance of jubahs and dresses, while tops and pants were very basic,” says Azrina, who adds that their brand is continuously evolving with the times.

“We are always keeping track of new trends and how to incorporate them to our brand. We are known for our comfortable attire, so that is what we stick to and see how we can work from that.”

Azrina notes that in terms of colour, pastel hues are always a staple, but bold and colourful prints are popular as well.

Working within certain limitations such as ensuring the length and cut of the clothing adheres to conservative requirements can be a challenge, but modestwear brands know how to mix it up and keep it interesting.

For the brand Umma, founded by Zairin Azman, oversized styles are all the rage right now.

“Currently, oversized, boxy cuts with cute and pretty detailing are currently in trend,” says Zairin.

“So are easy-to-wear designs that can be mixed and matched with a lot of other pieces in one’s wardrobe,” she adds.

Najihah Mohd Shahrudin launched Bi.Albak last year, a minimalist and modern abaya brand with a range that includes the outer and inner dresses as well as scarves.

“Contemporary modestwear trends are leaning towards minimal styles and the choice of colours are on the pastel side, however, bold colours such as electric blue and brick orange are popular choices this year.”

“The outer abaya which features handsewn beads can be worn on its own, and the inner dress can be layered with a denim jacket, blazer, shirt, jumper or even a scarf with a belt,” adds Najihah.

All about the fabric

Ensuring modestwear is both wearable and comfortable hinges greatly on the choice of fabric.

It must strike a delicate balance, offering opacity while remaining lightweight, particularly crucial for wearability in tropical climates.

Mixed cotton is the fabric of choice for modestwear, as it combines coverage with comfort and breathability, according to Azrina.

“When selecting materials for modest clothing, it is crucial to consider factors such as fabric thickness, opacity, and layering techniques,” she says.

“To promote sustainability, our designers prioritise fabrics with higher natural yarn content and lower polyester content, thus minimising the environmental impact. Additionally, the use of high-quality fabrics ensures that individuals can enjoy their modestwear for years before it becomes necessary to dispose of them.”

Similarly, Umma also uses cotton in their designs.

“Definitely cotton, linen, cotton linen, chiffon, crepe, rayon, poplin, tencel as they are cooling for our weather and easy to wear,” says Zairin.

Styling tips

Even those who opt for minimalist attire often integrate jewellery into their ensembles.

From exploring various lengths and designs of understated yet stylish earrings to experimenting with long necklaces and bracelets, the best way to add an extra layer of sophistication to a modest look is by accessorising.

“When accessorising a modest outfit, use scarves for added colour, texture, or pattern. Consider stylish belts to enhance your shape, experiment with layering using cardigans, knitted vests, or a bomber jacket,” says Azrina.

“Remember to select accessories that reflect your personal style while maintaining modesty, and remember that accessories should enhance your outfit and reflect your personal style while remaining modest in nature,” she adds.

In Najihah’s opinion, less is more when it comes to styling modestwear.

“It’s best to always keep it simple and ensure that accessories match your clothing,” she says. “For example, if you choose to wear a satin or silk dress or abaya the accessories should be something shiny such as a clutch or a shiny handbag.”

“Complete the outfit with jewellery such as a dainty necklace or a bracelet and rings to elevate the whole look.”

Whatever you opt to style your modestwear look with, the key to looking and feeling good is clothes that you feel confident and comfortable wearing.
