Here are some pointers shared by experienced home gardeners to help you navigate building your home garden.
1. Observe the space you have
Before buying plants or equipment, understand your space’s conditions first such as the amount of sunlight it receives and the size of the space.
Different plants thrive under different lighting conditions, so choosing the wrong plant can quickly lead to disappointment.
2. Start small
Instead of attempting a full garden immediately, begin with one or two easy crops to grow inside a pot.
Plants recommended for starters are spring onions, kangkung, chilli, moringa and curry tree.

3. Reuse what you already have
Utilise containers around the house and turn food waste into fertiliser – such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds and crushed eggshells.
Avoid using spoiled meat and dairy products as the strong odour will attract animals.
4. Use natural pest repellent
Avoid using chemical pesticides and opt for natural methods.
Using neem oil, spraying garlic and chilli solutions as well as putting up sticky traps can help keep pests away while keeping plants free from chemicals.
5. Strive for consistency, not perfection
A garden grows slowly, so caring for plants requires patience and routine. Consistency is key. Be sure to water daily, check for pests and fertilise often.
6. Accept failures
Dead plants and failed seedlings are all a normal part of the learning process. The best way to learn is through trial and error.
Don’t feel discouraged over small holes or slight discolouration on leaves. These are often signs of natural growing conditions.
