Part of being a responsible dog owner is prioritising dog care, even when away on vacation or at work.
The American Kennel Club provides the following checklist for dog owners to keep in mind when setting up a dog sitter, ensuring that their dog is cared for and that time apart is stress-free.
Always keep your dog on their usual schedule while you’re gone and give the dog sitter a detailed breakdown of their daily routine, including walks and mealtimes. This will make the transition easier and prevent accidents.
Consistency is key when enforcing house rules for your dog. Always make sure the dog sitter knows what is and isn’t allowed in the house. Though you are away, it doesn’t mean your pet gets to break the rules.
If your dog has any medical conditions, allergies or medications, ensure your dog sitter knows the details in case of emergency or if they need to contact your dog’s vet for assistance.
If you’re unreachable, make sure there is a backup person the sitter can call in case of emergency.
Leave all pertinent information, including your hotel and itinerary if you are traveling, the emergency vet contact, and a credit card and authorization letter, if a vet visit is needed.
If you are going away for a long period of time, ensure you have enough food, doggie bags and other supplies stocked and ready for the dog sitter, especially in case your return gets delayed.
Make sure all cleaning products and other hazards (insect/weed killers, rat poison, medications, etc.) are safely stored out of your dogs reach. Repair any gaps in your yard fence and secure all gates. – American Kennel Club/Tribune News Service
