You don’t need to be a mechanic overnight. But knowing these simple things can save you money and avoid stress, and ensure you’re safer on the road.

Here are the essentials every woman (and man) should know:

1. Check tyre pressure monthly

Low pressure affects safety and fuel use. Don’t forget the spare tyre.

2. Learn to change a tyre

It takes about 10–15 minutes and it’s a skill worth learning.

3 Check engine oil

Make sure it’s between the minimum and maximum marks. Too low and it can damage your engine.

4. Monitor other fluids

Brake fluid and coolant should not be too low. Ask your mechanic to show you how to check.

5. Keep a battery power pack

A portable jump-starter can restart your car without waiting for help.

6. Understand what a good mechanic does

They explain clearly, show photos or parts replaced, and give options, not pressure.

7. Know your insurance benefits

Comprehensive policies may include free towing and roadside tyre changes.

8. Get a second opinion if unsure

If something feels off, ask questions or check with your regular mechanic.

Car care isn’t about becoming an expert. It’s about having enough knowledge to feel confident, whether you’re in a workshop, on the highway or teaching your child how to check tyre pressure for the first time.
