Though it is a hard scenario to fathom, pet theft happens every day across the country. It is important to be prepared and stay alert, especially considering that pet theft is on the rise.

Losing a canine companion is devastating. While it cannot always be helped, American Kennel Club offers these tips for preventing pet theft.

Walk close together

When you are out walking your dog, always keep them on a leash and within sight. This will reduce the likelihood of your pup wandering off and catching the attention of a potential dog thief.

Never leave your dog in your yard unattended

Whether it is your back or front yard, do not leave your dog outside by itself. This makes them an easy target, especially if your yard is visible from the street.

Be mindful of the information you give out

It’s standard for strangers to approach and admire your dog with you while you’re out and about. Though this is true, be careful about sharing too much information. Discussing the cost of your pet or where you live are not things you should share.

Don’t tie your dog outside a store

Leaving your pup on their own outside a store is extremely dangerous, even if you can see from the window. It only takes minutes for your attention to be elsewhere and someone can untie them.If you need to go into stores, see that they are dog-friendly or leave your dog at home.

Don’t leave your dog in the car

Like leaving them outside, it is also dangerous to leave your dog unattended in the car. Not just for the dog’s health, but also for their safety; it can prompt thieves to break into or steal your vehicle.

Make sure your pet is microchipped

Collars and tags are important but can be easily removed.Protect your dog by having them microchipped with a permanent ID and keep the information up to date. For more information on microchipping and pet theft prevention, visit AKC Reunite. – American Kennel Club/Tribune News Service
