The inaugural KL Design Festival 2022 begins today (Dec 1-18), with a focus on activating the Kuala Lumpur Creative and Cultural District.

Organised by thnklb and the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), the two-week event is under the purview of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Think City.

The festival is also supported by PAMNXT, the Graduate Committee of the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), wREGA (Graphic Design Association of Malaysia) and PEREKA (Industrial Design Association of Malaysia).

"We need to transform information and intelligence into a level of understanding visually, which is the function of design. To achieve this, the choice of material is vital. Aesthetic, functional, sustainable and green, we believe timber is the future,” said Roslina Idris, MTIB deputy director general for development and commercial.

The festival brings together some of the best local and international design products and ideas, and includes various programmes such as forums, events, exhibitions and installations from talented creatives and innovators.

These events will be held at four major locations – Dataran Merdeka, Benteng (River of Life), High Street Studio on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee and the official venue, GMBB Mall.

“We are working to rejuvenate downtown KL to realise the vision of Kuala Lumpur Creative and Cultural District (KLCCD), so naturally, design and architecture are very important manifestations of culture and heritage," said Daniel Lim, director of urban mechanics from Think City.

KL Design Festival director Muhamad Razif Nasruddin believes the event is the beginning of great things to come, not only for Klang Valley, but also for the Malaysian design industry at large.
