Food Trail: Kah Hiong beef noodles

Dish served with lava-hot sauce offers a real kick.

THERE is a new makan place specialising in beef noodles in Puchong’s Bandar Puteri and this place came highly recommended by my buddy Daryl Goh.

The last time I checked out a makan place recommended by him at a fancy butchery in a high-end supermarket in Publika near Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur, it was a total disaster.

I ended up paying RM25 for six slices of siew yuk (roast pork) that were rubbery and tasted really bad.

And this time around, Goh redeemed himself by recommending a really good makan place.

The restaurant in question is Kah Hiong Ngiu Chap (beef tripe noodles) in Jalan Puteri 4/8, Bandar Puteri.

Finding this makan place itself is an adventure.

The road is so new, you can’t even find it on Google Maps.

So, after taking a wild ride in the township, my wife Michelle finally spotted Kah Hiong Ngiu Chap.

The restaurant turned out to be an upscale noodle house with a posh interior.

Not only that, I heard that the makan place is a branch of the original restaurant that is located in Luyang district, Kota Kinabalu.

After working up a good appetite, we ordered a bowl of Ngiu Chap Fun with egg noodles and kuay teow.

Our order was promptly served and I must say that the quality of the beef noodles is pretty decent.

What I liked was the smooth-tasting beef broth, although the piece of radish that came with it was not soft enough.

Maybe that’s how people like it in Sabah.

I would rate the Ngiu Chap Fun a 6.5 out of 10 on the Samo-scale.

Price-wise, a bowl of beef noodles here costs RM12.90.

And dinner for two came to RM29, which is quite a premium price to pay.

My benchmark for excellent beef noodles is Kota Baru’s Lim Siong Kee’s beef noodles at KH20 coffee shop in Jalan Kenari 20,

Bandar Puchong Jaya.

This is a famous makan place in Kelantan and the daughter of the stall’s namesake had set up shop in the Klang Valley.

Back to Kah Hiong, a highly-recommended side dish here is the sup tulang.

This is meant for a group with a big appetite and sadly, there was just the two of us at the time.

We vowed to return with some friends to try out the other dishes.

What made my experience at Kah Hiong memorable was the liquid lava-hot chilli sauce.

It was so hot that sweat was streaming down my face.

That said, if you want to try out the chilli sauce, bring a spare face towel or wear a headband.

Kah Hiong is located at Jalan Puteri 4/8 (N 03 01.013, E 101 36.802) and is open daily from 9am to 9pm.
