Crafting is a good skill for seniors

Creative  hobbies like craft-making offer seniors a therapeutic and enriching experience that enhances both their physical and mental well-being.

Sunway Sanctuary Health & Wellness Advisor Dr Ericson Chia says leatherworking and jewellery making are particularly effective for improving motor skills and focus due to the precise nature of the tasks.

“These craftworks involve tasks that engage fine motor skills, improving finger dexterity while sewing enhances concentration and hand-eye coordination,” he explains.

Beyond the physical benefits, Chia notes that these activities also encourage creative expression and problem-solving, fostering a sense of accomplishment.

“Seniors can personalise their creations while overcoming challenges that arise during the crafting process. These elements not only engage the mind but also promote a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction,” he adds.

“When seniors work on a project with a clear, tangible outcome, they will experience a sense of accomplishment and pride which is crucial for maintaining mental well-being,” he adds.

Craft-making sessions conducted in group settings, Chia says, provide a shared space for seniors to engage in conversation, exchange ideas and collaborate on solving problems.

“These connections are important, as seniors with stronger social ties tend to experience better sleep, reduced anxiety and depression, and improved immune function,” he explains.

This is why, Chia says, Sunway Sanctuary holds various activities, including craft sessions and baking workshops, on top of age-appropriate fitness classes for its residents.

“While they are designed to improve motor skills, focus, strength, and overall well-being, the activities also demonstrate the power of creative engagement in enriching the lives of seniors,” he concludes.
