Cricket fans will have the opportunity to chat about the sport with England women’s team captain Heather Knight and her India counterpart Mithali Raj during the Malaysian Cricket Association's online fundraising event in aid of Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) on May 30.
The #Cricket4WomensAid event will take place through web-based cloud conferencing application Zoom at 8pm and streamed live on the association’s Facebook page.
Knight is the Women Cricket World Cup 2017 winning captain and has played over 100 women's one-day internationals for England.
Mithali is the leading run-scorer in women's international cricket and the only female cricketer to surpass the 6,000-run mark in women's one-day international matches.
Fans (and donors) can interact with both cricket stars in a Q&A session through a moderator during the event, which is open to fans all over the world.
WAO’s mission is to end violence against women and promote gender equality in Malaysia. Since its inception in 1982, the organisation has been providing free crisis support and shelter to women and children who are survivors of domestic violence.
To help women facing hardship during and after the Covid-19 MCO/CMCO period, the Malaysian Cricket Association has initiated the #Cricket4WomensAid project, supported by the national men’s and women’s team, the Royal Selangor Club’s Cricket Section, and the Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation’s School of Media, Arts and Design.
The Malaysian Cricket Association also supports WAO’s #GirlsForGoals programme that provides a better life for girls. Every Ringgit contributed goes to the #GirlsForGoal project which provides a self-care bag (containing hygiene and health products) delivered to a girl in need and funding for events that highlight girls' rights and empowerment activities.
A contribution of RM30 provides three meals for a domestic violence survivor at WAO's shelter while RM50 finances one tuition session for a child survivor of domestic violence. A donation of RM100 provides support to a domestic violence survivor in court for half a day to facilitate access to justice while RM200 goes towards one vocational training session to help a survivor obtain a sustainable livelihood.
Through the #GirlsForGoals challenge, WAO empowers girls by placing them centre-stage to be the main drivers and advocates for their rights during and after the MCO/CMCO period.
