Hong Kong singer-actor Penny Chan parted ways with broadcast giant TVB in 2023 after his contract expired and subsequently went through a challenging period trying to make ends meet.

However, the 43-year-old has recently turned things around by partnering with friends to open a large menswear store in Lai Chi Kok, Kowloon, serving as the boss.

Among the celebrities who attended the launch on Wednesday (Dec 17) were Joe Yau, Tony Wong, Snow Suen and more.

Chan later shared his happiness on social media, writing: “I was so happy to see so many good friends coming by to support the opening of the new store. I hope everyone had a great time, and thank you for liking the brand.”

According to HK01, Chan once disclosed that his monthly income had dropped to just a few thousand dollars after his 13-year tenure with TVB ended.

At one point, he even had to borrow a six-figure sum from friends outside the entertainment industry to support his family.

To make ends meet, Chan took on various jobs – including livestream sales, working as a fitness instructor and vocal coach, and reportedly doing manual labour at construction sites.

Reflecting on that difficult period in a recent interview with Hong Kong media, the actor tearfully expressed his gratitude to family and friends, crediting their support for helping him persevere.

Chan kickstarted his showbiz career in 2009 and has appeared in TVB shows such as A Fist Within Four Walls (2016), Line Walker: The Prelude (2017), The Righteous Fists (2022) and more.

He married a woman from outside the entertainment industry in 2016, and they share two sons – Regan, eight; and Reino, five.
