Hong Kong star Michael Tao, dubbed the "Housewife Killer" due to his overwhelming popularity as an actor amongst housewives, has opened up about his past marriage to Wong Wai Po.

In a recent interview on a Hong Kong web programme, the 62-year-old, who tied the knot with Wong in 2000, described their 2007 divorce as a painful experience for both of them.

"That marriage was a learning experience. Looking back, it was imperfect and incomplete.

"However, I don't see a reason to dwell on its flaws. I believe it was the best arrangement from fate," he said.

At the time of their split, Tao faced criticism as "heartless", with some accusing him of abandoning Wong after his rise to fame.

Responding to the claims, the former TVB actor said: "Starting over requires a strong heart and the ability to rebuild yourself … Don't assume only women get hurt. Men get hurt too. (The divorce) was a mutual pain."

Tao and Wong first met through actor Bobby Au-yeung. The pair dated for 10 years before tying the knot.

According to reports, Tao is now married to a former journalist, and the couple has enjoyed a stable relationship since 2008.

He once described his current lover as his "life partner", noting that she stood by him when his career hit rock bottom following his divorce.
