With Father’s Day just around the corner, singer Sasi The Don has come up with a song titled Daddy Don. The track came up as a reflection on parenting during the pandemic.
In a press release, the song is described as a realisation that “the role of daddy means more than just being present. It means nurturing and being in the moment with someone who is dependent on you".
The father to seven-year-old girl is quoted in the press release: “It’s a storytelling experience that could be shared with a lot of people around the world. This song means hard work, it is a lot about me being a dad because it’s a journey. I am doing my part in talking about daddies, because I think they are unsung heroes.”
Daddy Don will be released on June 19 and will be accompanied by a music video featuring Sasi’s daughter, Shanaiya Lakshmi, showcasing that parent-child relationship.
Sasi, whose previous song was the 2018 hit ABCD, worked on Daddy Don for some time, changing the lyrics five times before settling on the final result.
Besides wanting to capture the essence of fatherhood, he was being extra meticulous as he wanted to make sure the chorus is simple enough that kids can sing along as well. Naturally, his daughter gave some input on this.
Sasi shared: “It’s a privilege to be a daddy. You don’t wake up in the morning and say, ‘I want to be a father.’ It’s something that comes to you.”
The reggae artiste, whose real name is Sasidharan Chandran, has been performing since the year 2000. In the course of his two-decade career, he has won a number of awards including Anugerah Industri Muzik Malaysia and Anugerah Planet Muzik. He is currently working on a new album titled Timeless.
Known also for his collaborative work – with the likes of Amy Search, Zainal Abidin and Jaclyn Victor to name a few – Sasi’s latest effort sees him working with singer Ibkinx, originally from Nigeria, as well as Indian classical vocalist Gayathri Vadive. He co-produced Daddy Don with D’Navigator.
According to singer, he is more proud of being a dad than being Sasi The Don. “It is what grounds me.”
