Alibaba Group Holding Ltd launched the beta version of an artificial intelligence (AI) music-generation model that can turn a single text prompt into a fully produced song, expanding the Chinese technology giant’s push into generative AI.

The AI model, HappyShrimp 1.0, can generate melodies, arrangements, lyrics and vocals based on prompts describing an emotion, story or musical genre, Alibaba said in a statement on Aug 17. Users can create full vocal tracks or instrumental compositions without technical music knowledge, or provide their own lyrics for the AI to generate a song.

Alibaba said HappyShrimp will team up with China’s Taihe Music Group on artist co-creation and content development. The model supports genres ranging from Chinese-style music and pop to rock, electronic, and jazz. Users can also specify instrumentation, vocal style, and emotional progression.

The Hangzhou-headquartered tech giant is undergoing a broader corporate reorganisation under chief executive officer Eddie Wu. The company aims to quintuple cloud and AI revenue to US$100bil (RM406.16bil) annually in five years. This month, the company released its biggest-ever AI model, claiming performance on par with global leader Anthropic PBC in the latest Chinese breakthrough to challenge US rivals. – Bloomberg
