For generations, Crayon Shinchan has been a familiar presence on TV screens, comic pages, and cinema halls, winning fans with cheeky humour and unexpected warmth.

Now, that world takes physical form at the Crayon Shinchan: Space & Time Adventure Interactive Exhibition at Incubase Arena Malaysia, Level 2, Fahrenheit88 in Kuala Lumpur, where visitors can step directly into the universe created by late manga artist Yoshito Usui (1958–2009).

Spanning nearly 1,000sq m, the all-ages exhibition, running until March 26, 2026, is divided into five themed zones tracing Shinchan’s adventures across manga, television, and film.

Designed as a walk-through experience, it blends recreated sets, projections, and interactive elements.

The journey begins at the Nohara Family Living Room, instantly recognisable to fans.

A short guided video introduces the storyline: Shinchan, his family, and friends are swept into a mysterious time rift. The familiar domestic setting grounds the experience, reflecting the series’ recurring theme of everyday life.

Next, visitors enter Shinchan’s Movie Universe, where scenes from the franchise’s films come alive – from outer space adventures to ninja villages. Interactive games also allow visitors to participate rather than merely observe.

The Time Tunnel follows, a visually immersive corridor charting 35 years of Crayon Shinchan’s history. Animated projections, light, and sound guide visitors through historic moments, compressing decades of stories into a single passage.

It is a nostalgic highlight for the faithful, while newcomers gain insight into the character’s enduring appeal.

For new fan Sammie Hum, the exhibition captures why Crayon Shinchan has remained relevant for over three decades.

“Although I only started watching Crayon Shinchan through recent movies, it did not take long to see why the series has captured hearts for over 35 years,” says Hum.

“Beneath the mischief and laughter lies a reminder to stay true to ourselves and embrace our inner child as we grow into adulthood,” she adds.

The pace slows at the "Crayon Shinchan Museum", which celebrates the creative legacy behind the series.

Displays trace the evolution of Crayon Shinchan and other characters, alongside rare movie posters and archival material.

The zone also pays tribute to Usui, whose manga debut in 1990 grew into a long-running anime and film franchise. Usui’s blend of irreverent humour and insights into family life continues to resonate long after his passing.

At a recent gallery tour, influencer and YouTuber Chan Yong explored the Crayon Shinchan experience with a big smile.

“As a child, I loved his mischievous personality. Growing up, I realised he reminds us that while facing life’s challenges, we should never forget the joy of being playful,” says Chan Yong.

Beyond the physical sets, a mobile app game runs throughout the exhibition. By scanning QR codes and completing missions, visitors join the Kasukabe Defence Force and unlock digital rewards.

The experience concludes at a pop-up store and themed cafe.
