The story of Malaysian-Chinese heritage, from migration and settlement to the evolution of traditions on Malaysian soil, will take centre stage at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) in Suria KLCC through A Dance Spectacular on Sept 5.

The two-hour performance, featuring a collaboration between ASK Dance Company and Dua Space Dance Theatre, will explore heritage, identity and resilience through contemporary interpretations of traditional Chinese dance, live music and visual imagery.

The performance - a double-bill show - is part of DFP's efforts to promote cultural diversity and provide Malaysian performing arts groups with a platform to reinterpret traditional heritage in a contemporary setting.

The Malaysian Chinese

Opening the evening, ASK Dance Company will present Pearl Of The Orient, a production depicting the movement of Chinese traditions to Malaya and their evolution into a uniquely Malaysian expression.

ASK Dance Company founder Prof Dr Joseph Gonzales said the production uses dance to portray migration, assimilation and the role of early settlers in shaping the nation's diverse cultural fabric.

"It's not really a narrative that you will see, but you will understand that the journey begins in China and the Chinese come to Malaysia, and in Malaysia they develop their own traditions, cultures, and customs that are unique to Malaysian Chinese,” he said in a recent interview at DFP.

The production also incorporates references to significant chapters in Malaysian history, including the tin-mining era, alongside familiar cultural icons such as mahjong and festive celebrations, accompanied by live hand-percussion music.

"The feeling is really a celebration of our Chinese-ness in Malaysia and Chinese being a part of the national identity and part of the national narrative, I think that's very important,” he said.

Featuring 17 dancers, ASK's segment will present works including Spirit Of The Fire Horse, Dai Dance, Sword Dance, Tin Mining Dance, Mahjong Dance, and a festive Lion And Chopstick Dance finale.

A poetic meditation

In the second half of the show, Dua Space Dance Theatre will take the stage with Passage Into The Unknown: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, performed by 10 dancers and exploring human resilience and ancestral philosophy through the four natural elements.

It will highlight our connection to nature through a refined, earthy aesthetic, emphasising the Selangor-based dance company’s focus on dance, ecology, and cultural education.

Dua Space Dance Theatre founder and choreographer Anthony Meh Kim Chuan described the collaboration as a platform to unite homegrown dance companies on the DFP stage.

"Everyone knows that running a full-time dance company is quite difficult in Malaysia, so we are very thankful to the organiser for giving us this fantastic opportunity to be able to perform here,” said Meh.

Blending traditional Chinese dance styles with expressive contemporary movement, Dua Space's performance combines emotive choreography with live vocalists and instrumentalists to offer a poetic reflection on courage and harmony. – Bernama
