All things arts, tigers and traditional craft this weekend in KL

It is looking like a busy weekend in Kuala Lumpur. Check out these arts events that focus on bringing the community together and rediscovering the joys of creative work... all with a festive twist as we get ready to usher in the year of the Black Water Tiger.

A Teagerrific New Year celebration

Venue: GMBB, Jalan Robertson, Bukit Bintang, KL

Date and time: Jan 15 and 16, Jan 22 and 23 (11am to 6pm)

Held over two consecutive weekends, Malaysia's creative community mall GMBB’s latest programme will feature a series of pop-ups and workshops revolving around tea and art. Organised in collaboration with children educational centre Kiddoz Place, learn more about tea in the workshops, or tap into your artistic side and create your own ceramic teacups and floral tea soaps.

Swing by the Pingmin CNY Market, which focuses on the new year with traditional crafts such as paper cutting and dough sculpting.

And if you’ve always wanted to make a mechanical tiger doll from scratch, sign up for the Tiger Automata Workshop by artist-illustrator Low Khay Hooi. This workshop will be conducted in Mandarin.

Kwai Chai Hong’s Live Wild And Prosper art installation

This art installation features Alice Chang’s Malayan Tiger Family and Odd’s Stretch Out, ushering in the Year of the Tiger in style with tiger sculptures and avant-garde stretch fabric art with traditional Chinese papercut.

Depicting parent tigers looking after their cub, Malayan Tiger Family portrays love, hope, nurture, protection and support, while the anchor points of Odd’s stretched fabric art represent the connections that sends a message of inclusivity at Kwai Chai Hong where people from all walks of life are welcome to share, learn, celebrate Chinese culture, and in this case, come together for a noble cause.

At the same time, take a moment to reflect on the plight of the critically endangered Malayan Tiger. All the proceeds from the sale of the Malayan Tiger Family sculptures will be donated to WWF-Malaysia's tiger conservation efforts.

Lostgens’ Contemporary Art Space collaborates with Moutou, Findars and Wui Leng Association in Panggung Lapan CNY Art Weekend. Workshops include the Propitious Tiger Letterpress session, CNY T-Shirt silkscreening and Nian Hua (Traditional Prints) DIY Rubbing. There is also a paper clay tiger workshop for kids.

In the spirit of the festivities, the Tiger Art Exhibition presents different takes on this majestic beast.

Music is a staple at this event, with performances featuring Buddha Beat, Euseng Seto, Kent Lee, Aiwei Foo, Yoong How Thong and DJ Wei), and buskers at the CNY Art and Craft Market.

Not quite a CNY-themed exhibition, but this 'The Back Room Shop' show offers an 'art retail' experience to delight visitors looking for a unique festive gift.

"Hello 2022! We are kicking off with one of our favourite things when we head to a museum shop, the artists’ merchandise! Therefore, we have put together some books, ceramic works, limited edition prints, small artworks, stickers, tote bags, etc., all by artists! This is just another way of supporting artists’ practice," reads a statement from the gallery.

Printmaking online platform Outlet KL also has a pop-up space at the Back Room Shop.
