Stream time: Ipoh's Nusantara music fest to botanical culture series in Sarawak


This weekend's virtual Ipoh Music Symposium series, which focuses on the traditional and contemporary Nusantara music developments, features book launches, discussions, symposium sessions and a Nusantara concert on Oct 2.

FESTIVAL: PEATIX LIVE FESTIVAL

Date and Time: Oct 2

The three-day Peatix Live Festival, which brought organisers from Malaysia, Singapore and Japan together for a virtual offering of arts, music and workshops ends on Oct 2.

Fly over to Japan for the theatre show Conclusion (3pm), inspired by American-British author Henry James’ horror novella The Turn Of The Screw. Directed by Satoshi Naka, this virtual show explores what happens after a tutor encounters a ghost.

Don't miss Malaysian singer-songwriter Brendan de Cruz in Nothing But Malaysia: Volume II at 9pm as he takes on the virtual stage with a folk rock set.

As a variety programme, you can also take a trip down memory lane with classic songs from the 1970s and 1980s in the Feng Fei Fei Tribute.

NATURE ART FESTIVAL

Date and Time: Oct 2, 9pm

In case you missed its week-long programming, you still have a chance to catch the Nature Art Festival’s (Nafas) closing event.

The community driven, eco-friendly event combines art, music, film, photography, poetry and recycling workshops while building awareness around environmental issues.

Organised by Rakan Segari (a coalition of community art and environmental NGOs based in Manjung, Perak), Nafas 2021 is supported by the Cultural Economy Development Agency (Cendana) and the Global Environment Policy’s Small Grants Programme under the United Nation Development Programme.

The closing ceremony will include musical performances by nature-inspired acoustic band Suara Anak Laut, Orang Asli traditional music group Luhiew Renaweij and Blukrang Khrang and poetry recitals by Izzah Dejavu and Hamzah Yazd.

ART: PLANT PEOPLE: UNEARTHING BOTANY IN SARAWAK

Date and Time: Oct 2, 4pm

Organised by Sarawak-based NGO Friends of Sarawak Museum, this online exhibition tells the story of botany in Sarawak, and how scientific study has changed our relationship with the plant life that surrounds us.

Catch the highlights of the exhibition, hear more from a panel of experts on Sarawak’s botanical heritage and get a chance to talk to them during a Q&A session during the launch event.

Plant People: Unearthing Botany In Sarawak will be streamed for free via Zoom.

DOCUMENTARY: ISLE TO ISLE

Date and Time: Oct 2-7, 2pm and 8pm

Experience Taiwan’s cultural stories through the viewpoints of notable characters in four biographical documentaries focusing on the spirit and life perspectives of selected Taiwanese culture observers and artists.

In André And His Olive Tree, follow the culinary journey of renowned Asian chef André Chiang.

Taiwan’s most illustrious calligraphy artist Tong Yang-tze challenges six budding fashion designers to incorporate calligraphy strokes into fashion in From Ink To Apparel.

In Ga-Tau Chang, Taiwan Colors Music's founder Chang Ga-tau looks back on the albums and rock festivals he has produced.

Finally, Past Present recounts the story of renowned Malaysian filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang.

Isle To Isle, ticketed, will be streamed via CloudTheatre.

IPOH MUSIC SYMPOSIUM 2021: NUSANTARA

This year's Ipoh Music Symposium online series, which focuses on the traditional and contemporary Nusantara music developments, features Konsert Nusantara as a weekend highlight on Oct 2 at 9pm. The virtual event series is organised by creative arts space PORT (People Of Remarkable Talents) in Ipoh, Gerakan Seni Ipoh and the Perak government and supported by the Cultural Economy Development Agency (Cendana) and Tourism Perak.

The impressive line-up of artistes for Konsert Nusantara, includes Datuk M.Nasir, Sada Borneo, Margasatwa, Herry & Alang from Orang Asli traditional music group Luhiew Renaweij, Kumpulan Selendang Perak, Space Gambus Experiment and Adiguru Che Mat Jusoh and Ondo Handpan.

Saturday's schedule is also packed with four symposium sessions surrounding Nusantara themes. They include Mobiliti & Sejarah (11am-12.45pm), Warisan, Budaya & Kelestarian (2pm-3.45pm), Adaptasi & Innovasi (3.50pm-5.30pm) and Bunyian Alternatif & Politik (5.45pm-7.30pm).

This Sunday's programming features a series of book launches and a roundtable discussion (4pm-6pm) surrounding the book Made in Nusantara: Studies in Popular Music, published by Routledge this year.
