STAR Media Group (SMG) is hosting its inaugural ESG Summit to unpack the pressing importance of driving positive change in the pursuit of a sustainable future.

Dedicated to promoting sustainable development and fostering ESG integration in various sectors, this ESG Summit will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from Nov 6 to 7.

Featuring an array of activities, the two-day conference brings together influential leaders, policymakers, investors, and sustainability professionals to engage in insightful discussions, share best practices, and explore innovative solutions.

This grand event will cover a wide range of topics, including sustainable development goals, climate change mitigation and adaptation, renewable energy, circular economy, social impact, diversity and inclusion, ethical business practices, stakeholder engagement, and rubrics of environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting.

It will also explore how Asean is adapting to shifting economic landscapes and embracing innovative solutions.

Attendees of the ESG Summit will gain meaningful insights and new perspectives in creating shared value by delving into best practices, strategies and techniques in unlocking the circular economy.

This includes practising responsible supply chains, making ethical decisions, understanding ESG materiality identification, risk evaluation, ESG disclosure and reporting.

Learning about integrating sustainability into existing business plans, addressing the social pillar in the sustainability agenda, harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data are in the agenda as well.

The ESG Summit empowers participants to pick up state-of-the-art techniques that can be drawn from the vast experience of the conference’s global speaker line-up and engage in thought-provoking panel discussions, keynote speeches, stream sessions and interactive networking pow wows, allowing for meaningful exchanges and collaborations.

Plenary sessions offer practical guidance to businesses on how they can navigate various business, regulatory and trade developments, such as carbon border adjustments and sustainable supply chains.

Attendees will be able to curate their own schedule with a choice of three streams over the two-day event.

Stream 1 will focus on governance and sustainable reporting, where leadership of a company board and top management is discussed to ensure the business is not exposed to reputational risks, financial risks, cybersecurity risks, among others.

Stream 2 will touch on economic security and value chain decarbonisation - managing and engaging talents to ensure low attrition rates, grow their skills and knowledge for a great career within a business, which in turn develops and strengthens one’s brand as a good employer.

Meanwhile, attendees interested in digital transformation can look forward to Stream 3 which emphasises on climate and sustainable innovation.

The summit will feature a keynote address on “From Vision to Action: Regional Implementation of NIMP 2030” by Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad along with a host of distinguished speakers from across the globe. They include:

Sime Darby Property sustainability general manager Dr Yasmin Rasyid who will be shedding light on “Harmonising Urban Biodiversity in Real Estate: The Sime Darby Property Coexistence Approach”.

Pos Malaysia group chief executive officer Charles Brewer will speak on “Leadership and Management Strategies for ESG Success.”

Prof Dr Michael Frese from the Asia School of Business (ASB) and Germany’s Leuphana University of Lueneburg will shed light on “Openness to New Technology and Eudaemonic Well Being, Personal Initiative, Fun and Passion”.

Malaysian Association of Public Advocacy for Nature (MAPAN) founder and chairman Ben Ong will share about “Entrepreneurship and SME Support: Integrating ESG into Their Business DNA”.

Orbis Business School managing director Dennis Akkerman will speak on “Ethical Leadership and Corporate Values: Why Taking Shortcuts Is Not Sustainable”.

Bring Back Our Rare Animals (BORA) chief executive officer Datuk Dr John Payne will touch on “First Steps Towards a Nature Positive Malaysia”.

ESG BoardRoom head Tina Thomas will be giving two separate talks over the two-day conference, touching on “ESG Regulation and Compliance: Navigating the Evolving Landscape” and “Climate-Proofing Our Future: Adaptation and Sustainability in Critical Sectors”.

PwC Malaysia social impact, sustainability and climate change director Malar Odayappan will speak about “Engaging Next Gen Workforce for ESG Roles: Getting Everyone On Board With Your Sustainability Roadmap”.

Zurich chief operations officer of operations and technology Ally Robertson, chief risk officer of property and casualty and sustainability risk head Teresa Wong as well as chief human resource officer MyeLene Teo will be in a panel discussing about the company’s net-zero journey and its overall operation, focusing on leadership in sustainability.

Boston Consulting Group managing director and partner Dave Sivaprasad, who is leading the Sustainability and Climate Change practice in South-East Asia, will share about “Carbon Pricing and Financing in Sustainable Business Transformation”.

Yayasan Hijau Malaysia chief executive officer Dr Nurul Muiz Murad will share about “Community Programme Blueprint: Opportunity for ESG and Scope 3 Offset Disclosure and Reporting”.

ASB senior lecturer Dr Pieter Stek will speak about “An Asean-wide Perspective on ESG Practices”.

Saxon Renewables founder and managing director Reik Ong’s session will be on “The Strategic Role of Environmental Commodities (RECs and carbon credits) in Corporate Sustainable Initiatives”.

Singapore’s Givvable co-founder and Asia Pacific managing director Naomi Vowels will share on “Value Chain Sustainability: How to Align Value Chain Partners with Your Sustainability Objectives”.

Thoughts in Gear chief executive officer Margie Ong will talk about “Building Resilient Supply Chains: ESG Driven Sustainable Pathways”.
