KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s (PETRONAS) wholly owned subsidiary PETRONAS Suriname E&P BV (PSEPBV) has signed production sharing contracts for Blocks 9 and 10, located in shallow offshore regions of Suriname.

In a statement, the national oil and gas company said the agreements were signed with Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname NV (Staatsolie), Paradise Oil Co NV (POC), and consortium partners Chevron Suriname Exploration Ltd (Chevron) and QatarEnergy International E&P LLC (QatarEnergy).

“The contracts were awarded as part of the Suriname Post Shallow Offshore 2 Bid Round 2024 to 2025, following the consortium’s successful bid,” it said.

PETRONAS said that the contracts mark a significant milestone in the company’s continued expansion in the Suriname-Guyana Basin, a region recognised globally for its hydrocarbon potential.

It said Blocks 9 and 10 span a combined area of approximately 5,456 square kilometres and are strategically located between proven deepwater discoveries and onshore producing fields.

“Under the contracts, PETRONAS holds a 30% participating interest and serves as the operator for Block 9, with Chevron and QatarEnergy each holding 20%, and POC holding 30%.

“For Block 10, PETRONAS also holds a 30% participating interest, while Chevron acts as the operator with 30%, QatarEnergy 30% and POC 10%,” it said.

The signing ceremony was held in Paramaribo, Suriname, with PETRONAS represented by PSEPBV country chair Danny Tan Chern Han.

Staatsolie was represented by its managing director Annand Jagesar, Chevron by its frontier exploration director Andrew Deighan, QatarEnergy by its manager of international upstream and exploration Ali Al-Mana, and POC by its director Rekha Bissumbhar.

PETRONAS vice-president of exploration Faisal Bakar said, “PETRONAS is focused on growing our presence in Suriname, and we thank Staatsolie and the government of the Republic of Suriname for their continued support.”

He said that, building on PETRONAS’ recent success and aspiration to grow in the country, the company is preparing for upcoming exploration activities.

“The expansion into Blocks 9 and 10 reflects our confidence in Suriname’s offshore potential and our commitment to creating sustainable value for the nation and its people,” he said. — Bernama
