BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Carrying the slogan, ‘Protecting Brunei’s Beaches, One Clean-up at a Time’, the beach clean-up at Meragang Beach brought together over 350 participants, including volunteers, youth, partners and members of the public, who cleared 1,356kg of trash from the beach on Sunday (June 14).

Gracing the activity was the Crown Princess Pengiran Anak Isteri Sarah Salleh Ab Rahaman.

Organised by Poni Foundation in conjunction with Ocean Week Brunei 2026, the initiative aims to encourage more people in Brunei to take practical action in protecting the country’s coastal and marine environment.

Beach clean-ups are important because rubbish left along the coast can easily be washed into the sea, where it affects marine life, damages habitats, pollutes the water, and reduces the beauty and safety of public beaches.

Plastic waste, fishing lines, bottles, packaging, and other discarded items can also be mistaken for food by marine animals or become entangled around them. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
